The Presidential Platform

Ladies and gents!

The weather is heating up and so is triathlon season.  Last week saw the Sprint State Championships @ The Australia Day Triathlon.  Congratulations to all participants.  UWA had a super day, with many placings among our members.  See below for a full wrap up from James on UWA's day.

Following on from the race on Saturday, we had our UWA 'Straya Day weekend.  Whilst numbers weren't huge, we had an excellent couple of days riding, yoga'ing, bike mechanic'ing, swimming and running.  Special mention to Chris Sellings, who came along and gave his time to help us all fix our bikes!  Thanks to everyone who got involved and especially Adrian who was the brains behind the whole operation.  Full weekend wrap-up can also be found below.

Speaking of Adrian, congratulations to Adrian and Sarah, who recently got engaged.  Wishing you both all the best on the next stage of your journey together!

The season continues tonight, with the North Coast Aquathlon, and then again on February 17th, with the Bunbury City Classic.  See the club calendar here

Sunday we have our BBQ Fundraiser @ Bunnings in Subiaco.  Thanks in advance to all our volunteers and Tasha for coordinating.  For everyone else, get along and buy a snag or 10!!!

Friday 1st of March we'll have a Friday evening run and drinks where we look to get the new uni students on board and involved.  5:30pm at The Tav, we'll put an event up on Facebook.

Finally, a reminder that all members can come along for a couple of free training sessions (Wed running / Tuesday windtrainer) to test out the current regime to see if they want to sign up - just let us know via email, facebook or old fashioned face to face so we know who to expect. Equally if you ever have a friend you're trying to convince to come along, let them know they can come for a couple of freebies to see if they like it.

Sports Nutrition tip from Gaby ðŸ’ªðŸ½

Healthy diets from sustainable food systems

The Lancet recently released science-based guidelines to define unifying principles that best promote the health of people and the planet.  Fortunately, the diet that is best for health is the same diet that is best for the planet.
The report establishes that "global adoption of the reference diet by 2050 will require worldwide consumption of red meat and sugar to reduce by more than 50%, and consumption of nuts, fruits, vegetables, and legumes to increase by 100%".

I strongly encourage you to have a look at the report, a summary version is also available

UWATC Does Aussie Day Long Weekend 2019, Adrian Hobson

This year we changed it up a bit to make the most of the Australia Day long weekend and beautiful Perth sunshine. The weekend kicked off in true blue Aussie fashion with the Australia Day Sprint Triathlon at Point Walter. Well done to all those that competed, mastered the tough hills and dodged the wayward bidons - it sure made for exciting spectating!

Sunday saw Club Members and friends head out on the Club Ride before returning to UWA for a Yoga session. After mastering the Pigeon pose (work to be done here) and attempting to connect ear to foot (way off), we retired for a quick bite to eat under the UWATC Gazebo.

The bike maintenance session proved to be popular and well worth the effort as we refined those gears, changed cassettes and learned some new maintenance skills under the guidance of Chris Sellings.

On Monday we headed out to Lake Leschenaultia in the hills for a casual morning of swim/ run training and of course a coffee and eats along the lake shore afterwards. The water was lovely and not too weedy as we struck out on our swim course, which of course had to include a bomby off the pontoon. Post swim we pulled on the runners for an easy trail run around the lake. Thanks to Beth who brought enough food to fill a group of triathletes (usually not possible).

Thanks to everyone who attended the sessions and helped out/ contributed tools and cars/ helped pack up over the weekend, it is much appreciated!

Australia Day wrap up, James Allen

Triathlon’s most patriotic event was held last weekend. The Australia Day Triathlon proved to be an exciting day for many as the state’s triathletes contested the coveted (and now patriotic) state championships title.

The course promised an always pleasant swim in the Swan River followed by an undulating; but not especially technical (by Steve’s standards) bike course. This was wrapped up by a mostly flat run.

We were greeted on the morning by an array of Australia Day paraphernalia including one spectator who had decided to dye their dog in true-blue Aussie fashion. The spirit of the event was bolstered by an always exuberant Steve Doyle in addition to an Australian Idol-esque performance of the national anthem by an unfortunate (but nonetheless willing) tech official.

Ignoring the stiff headwind and mild congestion on the bike course it was a (mostly) enjoyable day. Congratulations to everyone that raced; it was awesome to have such a good turnout. Special mention to any of those that managed to snag a place in their respective category. The next race on the agenda will be the North Coast Aquathlon tonight; closely followed by the Bunbury OD.

A photo of the Australia Day Dog wasn't found so you can see these lads instead:

Results below, missing Tommaso Puccini 2nd in his category and Rhianna Hepburn, 3rd Open / 2nd State Champs.
