The Presidential Platform

Hi team,

It's cold, dark and more than a little wet. Even Perth is a little less perfect in the depths of winter! But that's not stopped us kicking off the new UWATC training program with plenty of smiling faces, and now that we're past the solstice everything will continue to look up.

See the training page on our website for all the details and get on board.

During the triathlon off-season, plenty of us work on our running over winter. Well done to Daniel, Alex and Tash who ran the Perth Marathon a couple of weeks ago - especially Tash who had an amazingly well-paced run and came in very comfortably under her goal of sub-4 hours. Very impressive for a first marathon! See the Race Reports section of the website for a few event photos.

One young man who has been training hard through the winter is Rahul Jegatheva! The reigning U19 Aquathlon World Champion will be defending his title in Fyn, Denmark on July 12 at the ITU Multisport World Championships. Anyone who swims has seen him burning up (and around) the pool the last few weeks. Please wish him the best of luck for his race before he leaves on the July 8!

See below for more ...

Cheers,
Brenden Koh

Two time World Champion at age 16?

Young Rahul Jegatheva, who has long trained under the watchful eye of UWATC head coach Grant Landers, will be attempting something extremely rare in the month of July 2018: to become a two-time World Champion at the age of 16. Rahul will be departing for Fyn, Denmark on the July 8 to fly the Aussie flag at the 2018 ITU Multisport World Championships in the Aquathlon discipline. He won the 19&U World Championships in Penticton, Canada last year when still 15 and hopes for a repeat performance in the Junior Elite division this year.

The Aquathlon at the world championships consists of a 1km swim followed by a 5km run, and Rahul's win in Canada last year was a first for an Australian at the event. Rahul is a strong swimmer and runner, qualifying for the Australian National Championships in both pool and open water swimming as well as track and cross-country running, but it is when these two are put together that he moves into a class of his own. He's unbeaten in the Aquathlon in Western Australia across any age group in more than 30 races across a 3 year period culminating in Australian and world titles.

"It's been a tough year this year as I am in Year 12, and it has been difficult to get the right balance between training and studies. My coaches have been amazing and helped me get through all of it. I hope to do my country and my coaches, as well as my Aussies teammates, proud in Denmark on the 12th of July".

Sports Nutrition tip from Gaby ðŸ’ªðŸ½

Let's go bananas 🙃 ðŸ’

When we think of consuming carbohydrates during our training, we usually think of products such as gels, chews or sports drinks. However, recent research has suggested that consuming bananas during 2.5 to 3 hours of cycling provided the same performance benefit as consuming an equal amount of carbohydrate through a sports drink.  Bananas are a healthy source of fibre, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C and various antioxidants and phytonutrients. One large banana contains approximately 30 g of carbohydrate.
