Hi team!

It has been great to see so many people back at training. With Phase 4 now being in place in WA, we are seeing races slowly appearing back on the calendar which is another good incentive to keep the training going.

We love supporting the triathlon community and this year more than ever, Busselton Half needs our support. The SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon (aka Busso Half) is entering into its thirty fourth year and is an event that is much loved by the triathlon community. We hope we can see lots of you doing either solo, relay or volunteering for this event. More details here.

Our training sessions are designed and organised to cater for as many of you as possible, this is why we would love to hear your thoughts on the recent online windtrainer sessions to help us plan for the coming months. Please complete this short survey to let us know what you think. Survey closes on Sunday 12 July.

Thank you to all the people who put their hand up to support as duty officer during the swimming sessions. Contact tracing is no longer required but we still would like to say thank you for your help. We are having coffee all together on Friday 17th July after our last pre-Grant swimming session. Feel free to join us at Broadway Eatery if you are around.

Hope to keep seeing so many of you at training!

All about... Daniel Sly!

1.    Tell us about yourself?

My name is Daniel, and I work as a Consultant with an IT Software vendor.  My better half, Alex, and I came to Perth about 6 years ago, when my employer asked me to consider moving so we had a WA presence.  This promised to save me lots of time on planes, and sounded like a good adventure.  What started out as a two year plan is now 6 years and counting and we've set up a nice lifestyle for ourselves here in Perth.  UWATC has been a big part of that for us!

2.    How did you start in triathlon and when did you join the club?

As with much of my life, Alex has the bright ideas, and I'm more than happy to go along for the ride.  I had actually done a few Sprint triathlons in the past, usually with no training, which meant particularly for me a pretty painful run leg to finish and a lack of enthusiasm to keep the habit.  After our first year living in WA, we'd heard about Busso 70.3 from other runners and our interest was piqued.  Alex had just started her PhD at UWA, so UWATC seemed a logical choice for a club to join, so we got on board and have never looked back.

3.    What do you enjoy most about the sport?

Ultimately, I enjoy the challenge it provides.  There's always something to improve, and if one aspect of your training or race goes awry, there's another leg to try and make up for it.  Beyond that, I enjoy being outside and away from technology!  I spend a lot of time in front of a screen and it's good to be forced away and to confront my own thoughts!  It's also provided an inspiration for travel and adventure, leading to much of our exploration of WA, and in recent years travelling to the UK for The Woburner and Lausanne last year for the ITU World Champs.  Being a member of UWATC also provides a social aspect and it's great to have a group of like minded friends to encourage and share the experience with.

4.    Favourite leg and why?

In general, I enjoy all three legs.  When it comes to races I think I'm generally just looking forward to the next leg.  Swim -> Bike -> Run -> Beer!  ðŸ™‚  I've still never been so excited about a half marathon as at the end of the bike during my first 70.3.

5.    Best triathlon tip?

Marry someone who's also into triathlon.  It means you get in less trouble for the occasional extravagant purchase and all the hours spent training.  It helps also if they're less lazy than you and can keep you honest when staying in bed seems the more appealing option!  Otherwise, joining UWATC has been great for us to ensure our training is also a social endeavour!

6.    What’s your next goal?

At the moment I'm on the comeback from a back injury, so I just want to get back to running and riding.  If that goes well, maybe one of the 70.3s later in the year.  Beyond that, and I'm not sure when, but I'd love to do another Ironman and give it a better crack.  Now that I know a little more about surviving it, I'd like to try and push the performance a little more and see what I can do!
